The neighbourhood of El Pardo is located in the district of Fuencarral-El Pardo, in the extreme northwest of Madrid. It borders the municipalities of Torrelodones, Hoyo de Manzanares, Colmenar Viejo and Tres Cantos to the north; the municipalities of Colmenar Viejo, San Sebastián de los Reyes and Alcobendas to the northeast; Tapia del Monte de El Pardo to the east; motorway M-40 and Monte de El Pardo to the south; and the municipality of Las Rozas to the west.

Most of the neighbourhood’s population lives in the central area, and this is where you can also find Palacio de El Pardo, which was General Franco’s royal residence. It has large gardens.

El Pardo stands out for its green zones with lovely flora and fauna that is well taken care of, especially the Monte de El Pardo. The area can be easily reached by private car, and there is also a bus connection.

It is located in the northwest of its district, and it is one of the greener neighbourhoods in the Spanish capital. There is a good public transport network by bus in the area, and there are also a couple of shopping options.

In 2018 it had 3,483 residents, and many of these residents work at the Royal Palace of El Pardo, the National Heritage or in the military (more specifically with the Royal Guard). Besides these residents, part of the people was already living there from before Franco’s regime.

The average age of the population is considerably advanced, and this is due to scarce economic activities in the area. There are some bars, restaurants and small shops, but most of all the neighbourhood has a residential character. Besides these characteristics, it is practically impossible to build new residential buildings, as it lies in the protected natural reserve of Monte de El Pardo.

One of the most interesting sights to see in the neighbourhood of El Pardo is Monte del Pardo, a forested area close to Monte de Viñuelas. It accounts for more than a quarter (26.4%) of the capital’s municipal area.

Monte del Pardo is the most important Mediterranean forest in the Community of Madrid, and it is one of the best-preserved forests in Europe, both in terms of flora,  with 120 catalogued species, and fauna, with approximately 200 small species.

The forest is about 16,000 hectares big, and alongside it, you can find the Rio Manzanares. The area was declared ZEPA (Zona Especial de Protección para Aves or Special Bird Protection Area) in 1987.
